HLAC - Fitness for life course 2018
I would have to honestly say that the largest take-away I have from this class is by keeping logs and tracking helps me pick back up when I have too much going on. The hardest thing for me has been time management because there is such a small window where I feel the energy to stay on track with working out. Walking has been a bit hard depending my my foot and it lets me recognize that I do not have to do too much to keep active. I feel like I have been in a holding pattern this semester because of not just my health but that of my daughter. To be able to log what little I do to keep up with exercising has been helpful.
I already knew my BMI was high, it has been for years. Until I can get on top of meal planning better and exercising more, I do not see this will change much. I wish I had never got out of shape but after my assault in 2006, when I weighed 115 life has really never allowed me the same freedoms both financially, emotionally and physically. While this assignment might not be exactly what you are looking for, it’s the reality of how often life gets in the way of a daily exercise routine and the day to day struggles that are real.
I had haital hernia surgery in Dec of last year. It changed a lot about how I eat and recently I have started having more issues, but it also has allowed me to eat smaller meals, and more frequently, just as it is often noted is the best way to eat when doing any sort of exercise routines or trying to stay fit. Before food was just something I grabbed and go just to get from one place to the next. I think God decided it was time to force me to slow down.
This class has been helpful in understanding what goals I want to achieve in the future and keeps the ideas from classmates in my head, as well as what works for me and what does not. I do expect my physical activity to return to normal sometime, but the doctor said it could be 12-18 months before I can run again. I presume I will always have issues with my foot, so I liked that I was able to be creative and bring into play some other ways to exercise that I might not have thought of otherwise.
While I might not have been able to be fully on board this semester, I have plenty to look back on to when the timing is better. And because I did keep logs, and track different exercises, I will know where to pick back up.
There is so much to learn in this class. From nutrition, to different exercises to stress management and mental and emotional health. It is really a well rounded course, and it gives me a TON to keep reflecting on. Understanding how each phase of this course ties into the next was interesting as well. Even if I felt it did not apply to me, it ended up being vital later.
I cannot figure out if being an older student is helpful or hurts my ability to do this course well. I have missed a lot of assignments due to outside interference and struggle knowing I might not pass but I can assure you that what I did learn from this class was not just useful but it will help in my future life’s endeavors and through my journey of foods I should eat more of and should eat less of. Those lessons are in my head when I make choices.
Overall I felt this course did help me for my future fitness plans. It was bad timing on my part but the ideals, the concepts and the education that came from it will continue to help me as I find my way to my future goals of fitness and good health.
